About the Author

Mucho gusto…me llamo Angelica Loreto. I was born and raised in Tucson, Arizona. With the teachings and customs of my families in Sonora, Mexico. The proximity of the borderlands to my birthplace in el otro lado was an important factor to my growing up Xicana. I knew that having this duality was very important in shaping my identity. It is with the same passion that my uniqueness of being a Xicana has motivated me and pushed me to obtain a higher education. I received my B.A. in Sociology concentrating on the social disparities in the city of Tucson low-income school districts compared to wealthy school districts. I am a proud Xicana who has been actively involved in the movement that creates social change to end racism, for profit prisons, discrimination, rights for LBGTQ and undocumented folks among other issues that I firmly believe in. I am driven for la causa. I have spent the majority of my life to working and advocating for these causes. Although activism is a very important aspect of my person and my life, my higher education is a very significant and special piece of who I am. I have a unique interest in documenting narco cultura. In particular, the core of my project for my M.S. in Mexican American Studies entirely focused on narcocorridos. My thesis project centered on humanizing the protagonists of the drug cartel and shinning a different lens to the singers/musicians who celebrate and glorify them. My goal is to allow their voices to be heard. By furthering my higher education, I intend to pursue a PhD with the hopes that my academic concentration in narcocorridos and narco cultura will expand a different pedagogy to this very important world.
