Overview

This vibrantly and expressively illustrated book invites children and parents to talk about feelings. It takes them through a range of emotions without calling them "good" or "bad," allowing children to examine their own emotional world.

Sometimes, we're happy, so we laugh and shout with glee. Other times, we're angry, and want to rage and roar.

It is not easy to deal with our many contradictory emotions. To recognize our own feelings and deal with them responsibly is an important learning process for children, and a trial of limits.

My Feelings and Me was written to help parents teach children about a difficult subject in a fun, easy-to-understand way. Parents will be grateful for the help!

About the Author

Holde Kreul lives in Germany. She studied psychology and has been working with children for her whole career. For a long time, she directed a day-care center for children with mental disorders. Today she has her own psychotherapeutic practice and works with children and adults.

Dagmar Geisler is a German author and illustrator. She studied graphic design at the University of Applied Sciences in Wiesbaden and worked for several publishing houses and broadcasting companies. Dagmar currently focuses mainly on children's books. She illustrated My Body Belongs to Me from My Head to My Toes which received the Silver Feather (Silberne Feder) Children's Book Prize from the German Medical Women's Association, and is the author/illustrator of I Won't Go With Strangers. She lives with her family in Switzerland.

Adults don’t always express their emotions, suggests Kreul in an introductory note addressed to “Grown-ups,” which makes it hard for children to know how to navigate their own. A small cast of pale-skinned kids experience different emotional states in the author’s practical guide to coping with feelings, illustrated with Geisler’s bright, emotive cartoons. “Sometimes I stomp on the floor in rage, or I break something. Then no one can get too close to me,” says one girl, her ponytail flying and a jagged, lightning bolt-like shape flashing behind her. Elsewhere, a boy comforts a friend in need: “Because I know my own feelings, I can often understand other people’s feelings, too. The text addresses the impacts emotions can leave, such as the anxiety that others won't like you anymore after a tantrum or how great it feels for someone to hold your hand when you're afraid. The book also goes the extra mile by showing how our interpretations of other people's emotions can improve our relationships with them. The illustrations and text don't color any of the emotions as "good" or "bad," letting little readers examine everything on an even playing field.
