Overview

When you see the world, the world sees you.

Dietmar Vogelmann left his country years ago and took a chance, starting a new life in Vietnam. Luckily, his experience in hotel management got him hired at a 5-star beachside resort, but his initial impression was less than favorable. In fact, he wanted to leave as soon as he arrived.

But something made him stay. Maybe it was the friendly native population who welcomed him with open arms, or perhaps the endless business opportunities he could see in this small country brimming with potential. It took years, but Vietnam eventually lived up to its magical reputation and changed his life in more ways than one.

Through the success and failure of various business ventures, Dietmar learned how determination, a strong work ethic and the support of a loving family can overcome any challenge and desperation. My Different Orient exposes the good, the bad and the ugly side of a life abroad.

About the Author

Growing up in a small German village I was always keen to discover what laid beyond the village sign. I wanted to explore and venture out. After finishing my apprenticeship as "Hospitality Specialist" I was bound to travel and work. Some of my destinations include UK's countryside, the Cayman Islands, the Maldives, Thailand and of course, Vietnam where I spend almost 1/4 of my life's time.

Living a life abroad, away from home, family and friends comes with it's own pair of challenges. I have discovered that writing about my personal experiences and adventures is not only helping me to feel better about the decisions I have made, but also will benefit my readers to learn from my mistakes.

My writing reflects my life as entrepreneur in Asia, my professional work in the hospitality industry (with some wonderful insight) as well as my multi-cultural family together with my wonderful Vietnamese wife and our son.
