About the Author

Sir William Howard Russell (1820-1907) was an Irish journalist whose reports showed the harsh reality of the Crimean War and inspired Florence Nightingale. He covered the American Civil War, the Franco-Prussian War, and British conflicts in India—creating public outrage and a demand for better medical care for military troops. He was knighted in 1895.
