This clinical text provides thorough coverage of testing procedures related to manual muscle testing, handheld dynamometer muscle strength assessment, and neurologic screening. A brief section on observational gait analysis as it applies to manual muscle testing is also included. The author's primary intent is to integrate manual muscle test procedures with neurologic screening techniques. This is a worthy objective and fills a void in some of the more traditional texts currently used in this area. The finished product meets the author's objectives. This is an excellent resource for physical therapists, occupational therapists, and other health professionals who routinely evaluate musculoskeletal integrity in clinical practice. A previous background in anatomy and basic understanding of kinesiology is assumed. The format of the text makes it ideal for use in a lecture or laboratory setting. Nine chapters are presented including fundamentals of manual muscle testing, manual muscle testing procedures for all major muscle groups in the body, a section on pediatric muscle testing, gait analysis as a screening tool, and a comprehensive section on neurologic exam procedures. A chapter review of handheld dynamometry is also included. References and a bibliography for each chapter are included. I especially liked the section on neurologic screening. The author presents the information in a very concise and readable format. The sections on pediatric muscle testing, handheld dynamometry, and the inclusion of gait analysis make this book unique. The manual muscle test procedures are clearly presented. This book is comprehensive and would be ideal for a physical therapy theory andprocedures course. In addition, practicing clinicians will find it to be an excellent reference. I highly recommend this book for students and clinicians and commend the author and contributors for their insight in publishing this ""one stop"" reference manual.

Description: This book covers the procedures and techniques for clinical muscle and sensory testing by health professionals. A companion DVD and website provide additional resources.
Purpose: According to the author, the second edition was written to respond to feedback to include case studies, facilitate critical thinking, and provide an easy to use format for learning. The author has successfully accomplished these goals with this second edition.
Audience: The book is intended for students and healthcare professionals who use muscle and sensory testing when examining a patient.
Features: Ten chapters and three appendixes comprehensively cover the topic in detail. Chapter one provides a nice overview of the role and principles of muscle strength testing. Subsequent chapters organize the material by upper and lower extremity and head, neck, and trunk areas. Dedicated chapters cover functional muscle testing, pediatric muscle testing, and the use of handheld dynamometry for muscle testing. These chapters are unique to this book. Later chapters demonstrate techniques underlying sensory examination and mental status, cranial nerve and reflex testing. The last chapter instructs the reader on how to perform an observational gait analysis as a screening tool. The layout of the book is excellent and illustrations are clear and supplement the written descriptions. The addition of arrows in each photo showing the direction of forces applied by the examiner during each test may further clarify performance. The inclusion of case studies and clinical commentaries throughout the book are helpful. The DVD provides accurate demonstrations of each test and the instruction is easy to follow. The spiral binding makes the book easy to use in lab sessions.
Assessment: The second edition is a nice improvement over the first edition. Even though there are many books on the topics of muscle and sensory testing, few offer the additional information that this book provides. It would be ideal in academic settings, but it also can serve as a useful resource for practicing clinicians who desire a handy reference on this topic.
