Overview

Meet military spouse, soccer mom, professional organizer, and savvy sleuth, Ellie Avery!

Moving four times in five years has honed Air Force wife Ellie Avery's packing and unpacking skills. But moving with a newborn daughter and husband Mitch in tow, during a heat wave, is enough to make her turn to chocolate for comfort. And when Ellie finds a local environmentalist dead on the side of the road, her instincts tell her this was no accident . . .

Ellie snoops into the activist's suspicious demise, only to realize she's getting closer to the killer . . . maybe too close! This first Ellie Avery mystery launched a series that continues to win readers' hearts.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly

Packed with helpful moving tips, Rosett's cute cozy debut introduces perky Ellie Avery, who prides herself on knowing her way around crying babies, poopy diapers and air force bases. Ellie, pilot hubby Mitch and baby daughter Livvy have hardly settled into their Vernon, Wash., off-base digs when Ellie discovers the body of another 52nd Air Refueling Squadron wife, Cass Vincent, by Cass's SUV alongside the road after a get-acquainted barbecue. Cass is the apparent victim of a nasty allergic reaction to numerous wasp stings, but Ellie later finds evidence that the flirty environmentalist may have been murdered. Though extraneous details sometimes slow the plot to a crawl, the appealing heroine and the intriguing insider peek into air force life (the author is married to an air force pilot) more than compensate. Kirkus Reviews

An Air Force family's relocation to Vernon, Wash., lands them in a nest of trouble. Ellie and Mitch Avery are such practiced packers that they can move fairly smoothly even with a newborn. In fact, Ellie runs a business that helps people who lack her organizational skills. Choosing off-base housing to escape Air Force activities, the Averys find that most of their neighbors are members of Mitch's squadron anyway. On the way home from a base barbecue, Ellie discovers the body of environmentally active Air Force wife Cass Vincent, dead of anaphylactic shock. Even sleep deprivation-her baby's refusal to keep normal hours has Ellie popping Hershey Kisses-doesn't prevent her from sticking her nose into the neighborhood mysteries. When Joe Vincent hires her to organize the removal of Cass's things, she finds a cup of wasps wedged under the gas pedal of the woman's car. Ellie will also have to deal with the murder of a squadron wife whose profligate spending condemned her to work two jobs secretly and a local land-development deal Cass had been trying to thwart. Although OSI and the local police are investigating, it's Ellie's snooping that eventually cracks the case-though only her rescue by Rex, the Vincents' escape-artist puppy, saves her from becoming another victim. A cozy debut that'll help you get organized and provide entertainment in your newfound spare time.
