About the Author

Justin [pronounced Juh- STEEN] Rodriguez is a 31 year old biracial black genderqueer girl who currently resides in the Seattle area. They first began their community organizing work in 2008 by successfully petitioning for better homeless services at the Gateway Center in Atlanta, where they too received services.

They continued their community work for the next seven years supporting the homeless of Washington DC through direct services, community organizing, outreach, and policy. This work also included training volunteers to conduct the first survey of homeless youth in the history of Washington, DC through the DC Alliance of Youth Advocates.

Justin's more aggressive organizing work did not end during their time in Washington, DC. Justin was a member of the Finance Committee of Occupy DC working with the other members to create and run one of the most structured and transparent financial systems in the Occupy Movement. Justin's other work in the Occupy DC Movement included organizing protests and creating the Food Committee for Occupy DC. They were also a member of the shortly lived Occupy Our Homes DC which succeeded in saving the home of Bertina Jones. Justin was also part of the attempt to reopen the Franklin School in November 2011 in Washington DC. In addition they participated in Bringing Justice to Justice protests at the U.S. Department of Justice during May 2013. The protests were led by Home Defenders League and Occupy Our Homes to address the need to arrest corrupt bankers over the housing crisis.

Now in Seattle, Justin remains dedicated to community building and fighting to create a better world. Justin was one the organizers and performers of the #BlackWomxnMatter Memorial held on May 21, 2015. They co-founded an organization dedicated to the #BlackLivesMatter Movement. This organization, United Against Systemic Racism (UASR), fought to create a better world and end all forms of systemic racism and other forms of oppression. In the early days of UASR, Justin organized the first #BlackTransLivesMatter protest in the country on February 10, 2015. During this protest, they lead a march that shut down the streets of Downtown Seattle with only 15 protesters. Justin currently uses their broad organizing knowledge to assist community organizations.

In 2018 Justin decided to write books as another means of transformative art. They self published their first book Let Me Speak My Mind which is a collection of all their favorite blog posts.
