Pagana, MD, FACS is Medical Director Emeritus at the Kathryn Candor Lundy Breast Health Center, Susquehanna Health System, Williamsport, Pennsylvania. Theresa Noel Pagana, MD, FAAEM, is an Emergency Medicine Physician, Virtua Voorhees Hospital, Voorhees, New Jersey.

Timothy J. Pagana is a retired Medical Director at the Kathryn Candor Lundy Breast Health Center, Susquehanna Health System, Williamsport, Pennsylvania.

Description: This seventh edition provides a broad overview of today's range of diagnostic and laboratory tests. The previous edition was published in 2018.
Purpose: The purpose of this book is to provide "...users with an up-to-date, extensive manual that allows rapid access to clinical relevant laboratory and diagnostic tests." These are worthy objectives well met by this book given the constant evolution and increasing numbers and availability of these tests.
Audience: The book does not explicitly state an intended audience, but it is obvious that the book will appeal to anyone in the healthcare field wanting more information on diagnostic and laboratory tests, including those early in their training (e.g., medical/nursing/allied health students) to those early in their careers. In general, people with a medical or scientific background will find it helpful. The authors are credible authorities and the book nicely weaves together their varied nursing and medical (including emergency medicine) perspectives.
Features: The presentation in this book is absolutely stunning - a standard format is used throughout, establishing a structured format for ease of information acquisition. I loved the inclusion of patient care instructions pre-, during, and post-procedure. There are added value guides (e.g., grouping of tests for "diagnostic testing for the most common diseases") and excellent use of the inside of the front and back covers for commonly sought information (e.g., common reference ranges, typical units of measure). One suggestion for the next edition is to synchronize the test listing and utility with those not recommended from the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) Foundation's Choosing Wisely Campaign (i.e., do NOT include the bleeding time, 2013 recommendation). Another observation is the book's coverage of SARS-CoV-2 testing (nucleic acid amplification vs. antigen vs. antibody), which lumps this testing under "coronavirus" and occupies just 1.5 pages (0.13% of the book). This is one indicator that the book contains excellent test overviews but is not one for those wanting deep dives into specific topic areas. Finally, there are supposedly additional online resources on the Elsevier Evolve website, but there was no content loaded when I visited.
Assessment: At over 1,000 pages, it is no surprise that this all-encompassing manual has it all. Of note, it is hefty and has a soft cover, which will not withstand frequent use — however, the ebook will make such a problem invalid. It is important to emphasize the book not only covers laboratory tests, but also diagnostic tests, which adds value for those curious about radiological, electrophysiological, endoscopic, or other non-laboratory diagnostic tests.

This revised edition is designed as a reference for laboratory and diagnostic tests. The text is clearly organized and includes indications for the use of the tests, reference standards, and interfering factors, to name a few. It is expected that the nurse/examiner uses standard precautions when collecting specimens. The alphabetical listing of laboratory tests enhances the ease of using this text in clinical practice settings. It is intended to provide a ready clinical reference for the selection and interpretation of laboratory tests. This text integrates physiological principles about the test or diagnostic procedures. It is targeted for practicing nurses and other healthcare professionals and faculty and students within these fields. This book is appropriate for primary, acute, and restorative healthcare settings. Positive features include the alphabetical listing of the tests and the well-done index. Each test is presented in a concise, consistent, and logical format. This format includes the normal findings, test explanation and related physiology, interfering factors, procedure and patient care (before, during, and after the test), and abnormal findings. This laboratory book is a good clinical reference for the student or practicing nurse. Nursing students need clear, concise diagnostic and laboratory test references in order to incorporate the implications of these tests into the plan of care for their clients.
