Purpose:The main objective is to provide an easy to use and comprehensive overview of definitions that cover all areas of dentistry. The intention is to provide an excellent resource for all personnel in a rapidly advancing field with growing expectations.
Audience:The book succeeds as a user friendly chairside glossary for the entire dental team.
Features:The main chapter containing the exhaustive alphabetical listing of terms is complemented by a pronunciation guide, a CD-ROM, and numerous appendixes covering symbols and abbreviations, American Dental Association (ADA) dental codes 2007/2008, anxiety and pain management, clinical oral structures, dental professional organizations, Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996, infection control, legal and ethical issues, how dental terms are made and read, nutrition and nutritional counseling, pharmacology, radiology and radiography, tooth numbering systems and explanation for mounting radiographs, and implant prosthetics. The definitions cover all basic areas of dentistry, from immunology to anesthesiology and from office management to legal terms. The CD-ROM provides a search engine and audio pronunciations and contains all illustrations. Thishandy book is an ideal reference containing the main dental terminology and is a recommended addition to the dental team. The only drawback is that radiographic terms are for film-based radiography.
Assessment:This is a very useful reference for all professionals in dentistry. This second edition offers more than 800 new terms, with a focus on anatomy, pathology, and oral surgery, and contains new and improved full-color illustrations. This is a nice overview of dental terminology and ideal in its pocket-sized version. However, for more detailed terminology on specific topics, more focused manuals should be consulted.
