The guide uses a case-based format to deliver a general overview of dermatology of the dog and cat, providing a reference that mirrors the way veterinarians will encounter different scenarios at random in real-life practice. It uses self-assessment problems to review the most common skin diseases encountered every day, plus some more obscure diseases that a veterinarian will face.

About the Author

Dr. Darren Berger is an Assistant Professor of dermatology at Iowa State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine. Prior to completing a residency in dermatology, he worked as a small animal general practitioner. His research interests include clinical pharmacology, Malassezia dermatitis, and equine hypersensitivity disorders.

Description: This is a clinical case-based book on small animal dermatology, complete with illustrations. The history is presented on one page, followed by questions about the case or disease process. The subsequent page lists answers to the questions and gives more details about the disease process, clinical treatments, prognosis, and related information. This is a second edition as a follow-up to the first edition written in 2011.
Purpose: The purpose is to use a case-based format to deliver a general overview of dermatology of the dog and cat. The book covers a wide variety of topics from the everyday encounter to more rare and unique diseases that have very characteristic presentations.
Audience: The book is directed toward veterinarians working in general practice settings, which I believe is optimal and ideal. It employs a succinct format to introduce and explain disease processes. The author is credible to present this information as a former general practicing veterinarian and now a board-certified dermatologist.
Features: The book covers a wide variety of diseases ranging from the very common to the unique and rare. Some of the cases are based purely on the identification and recognition of an organism or parasite, while others include in-depth questions on topics such as the inheritance of certain diseases. High-quality images are useful when evaluating cases. A great feature is that the cases cover intermingled topics throughout the book, rather than the first group all being devoted to the same topic, such as allergic cases. This format is helpful when evaluating cases at the middle or end of the book. The only shortcoming is what is seen in many books: the history and information is all very directive and pushes readers into the typical presentation for these cases. Distractor information would have been helpful at times, but I am reading this as a board-certified dermatologist, which isn't the intended audience!
Assessment: This is a good book for general practice veterinarians who are looking for additional training and exercises in small animal dermatology. Since it is case based, the book is set up perfectly for the way general veterinarians operate on a daily basis. The book does not replace the previous edition, but adds several new cases for evaluation and help with training. It can also serve as a resource for in-hospital continuing education (CE), which staff can work through and discuss.
