CHAPTER 1

Saturday 27 June 1914


Henry is taking much longer than usual.

And now Clara is afraid she is going to laugh. Just as she did that other time. The time of The Pickwick Papers. And that's what's trying to creep into her head again now. That book. That blessed book. Oh dear God, don't let it. Oh please, don't let it.

From where she is, Clara cannot see very much. She is on her back, her head raised on her two pillows, nightdress pushed up above her waist and her legs wide apart. The room is in darkness as it always is on these occasions but, as a concession to the warm summer night, Henry drew back the curtains before getting into bed. By the ambient light from outside she can see the ceiling and a shadowed version of Henry's moustachioed face.

She can smell him though – a mixture of toothpaste, meat, wine, brandy and the cigar he smoked in the restaurant before they came home. And she can hear him – hear his breathing which has now become something of a gentle pant, like a runner who has settled into a rhythm. She deliberately focuses on all these details because she is trying to keep her mind off The Pickwick Papers.

This is what happened last time.

He had taken her to dinner at the Trocadero. It was Saturday night – their usual night for this. As always he ordered a large, sizzling, bloody steak. She often wondered whether there was a connection between the slab of barely cooked meat that he ate and the eagerness he always felt afterwards. And she never liked this other connection between him 'taking her' to dinner and the act which is invariably required to follow. There is something vaguely prostitutional about it. (Is 'prostitutional' a real word, she wonders?)

Anyway, they came home and she could tell that he was aroused. He held an arm around her waist as they walked up Horn Lane to the house. As soon as they got inside, he went to kiss her on the lips. However, at that same moment she turned her head, looking in the hallstand mirror as she took off her hat. The result was that the kiss ended up sliding somewhat sloppily along her cheek. It was a wet kiss, that of a man who had drunk most of two bottles of red wine and finished off with a couple of brandies.

Mrs Parsons, the babysitter, emerged from the kitchen. Had Clara been by herself, Mrs Parsons would probably have been all set for a chat, but she knew better than to do that with Henry there. She put on her hat and coat and hurried out the door.

Henry followed Clara up the stairs as far as the door of the girls' room. Clara looked in as she always did on the sleeping occupants while Henry continued on to their room. Her fear that she would find them not breathing was not as pronounced as usual – the wine had also helped to relax Clara – but she listened silently until she had reassured herself that everything was well.

She went to the bathroom, washed her face, brushed her hair and teeth and then, returning to the bedroom, changed into her nightdress, putting her dress away carefully in the wardrobe. Meanwhile, Henry had changed into his pyjamas and, in slippered feet, headed for the toilet. She heard him there. The wooden seat and its cover made a solid thunk as they were lifted and set against the pipe that ran down from the cistern. Then came a long splashing as the wine and brandy went the way of all fine drink. Henry farted. And then she waited for the hollow sound of the seat and cover to be returned to their resting place on the bowl. No such sound came. Instead she could now hear that Henry had moved to the bathroom, which was closer to the bedroom. The tap ran and he softly hummed some tune or other.

She slipped into bed and, taking a jar of cream from her bedside locker, she moistened herself. When he returned, he clambered in beside her. He lay on his back for a few moments.

'A very pleasant night, don't you think, my dear?' he said.

'Very pleasant,' she replied.

It flashed through her mind that he might actually be too tired and was about to announce that he was going to sleep. But moments later her hopes were dashed. He turned to her and began to kiss her. She closed her eyes trying to surrender herself to the sensation and wondering if it would trigger anything down in her groin. Nothing stirred. After some more kissing he turned over, simultaneously rolling onto her in what she assumed he had intended to be one smooth movement. In reality it didn't quite work out as neatly as that. Crablike, he moved on his elbows, rolling his hips until he seemed to be happy with his position.

These days he was as fat as a font. His round belly pressed down on her. He had been so slim and athletic when she first met him. How had he gone to seed so quickly? And at such a young age? He was younger than her, for God's sake – by three years – only twenty nine. And she had borne two children. The belly was the thing that she hated most though. If you touched it with your hand and pressed it, it was solid and cold, like hard rubber – hard and unyielding. (Could you tell a person's personality from their belly?)

She felt him groping for the hem of her nightdress. As he began to drag it up, she did it for him – the whole thing felt a bit more voluntary that way. He raised his bottom to clear the way for her but even then she had to tug it past his belly which remained pressed against hers. She settled the nightdress just above her waist. She assumed that he wouldn't be bothered with her breasts tonight. She could feel his bulge pressing against her groin and then his thing slid through the opening of his pyjamas. Guiding it with his hand he pushed into her. She had not put the cream in far enough and his dry skin snagged on hers. It was uncomfortable rather than painful and she uttered a short intake of breath. The sound seemed to arouse him so that after a few perfunctory thrusts while resting on his elbows, he rose onto the palms of his hands. (Clara wondered if perfunctory was the same as cursory. She must remember to look them both up in the morning.) From time to time he made various noises – little gasps, louder groans – and gradually the intensity of his movements increased. She could sense the strain on his arms – they seemed to be almost vibrating with it. His breathing became heavier.

His body began to scissor to and fro and it was at this moment, when it looked like he was riding, that she thought of The Pickwick Papers.

Dickens. She loved Dickens. Later, much later, James would point out the pun to her, but she wasn't aware of it that night. She just remembered Messrs Pickwick, Winkle, Tupman and Snodgrass. Mr Winkle's repeated failed attempts to mount the horse under Mr Pickwick's guidance. The horse eventually losing interest and going home. Mr Pickwick then approaching the other horse, the one pulling the chaise and how this takes off with Mr Tupman and Mr Snodgrass. (Henry continued with his own galloping while she was thinking about all of this.)

She remembered that her copy of The Pickwick Papers had a picture in it of the chaise on its joyride. Mr Tupman has just tried to escape the runaway chaise by leaping from it. As a result he has landed head first in a bramble hedge – only his legs and his fat bottom in their tight white breeches protrude. Mr Snodgrass is in the air, having also parted company with the chaise. The horse and chaise are going over a humpbacked bridge and the stone wall of the bridge has ripped off one of the wheels, which is in motion like a child's hoop. Ducks and chickens squawk madly as they try to get out of the way.

It was all too much for Clara. She couldn't help herself. She burst out laughing.

Henry's ardour faded instantly. It was as though he had been on the chaise and had been thrown off. The thought of this just made her laugh even more. He shouted at her – she couldn't remember what exactly. But he was angry. Very, very angry indeed. And he stayed so for a good two weeks afterwards. Two weeks of icy silences and no conversation – even when they were in bed together – and no dinner out on Saturday night.

Now, once again, as Henry begins his cantering, that picture from The Pickwick Papers is on the periphery of Clara's brain. It is like an eager actor waiting in the wings for his cue to rush onstage. And, dear God, if it does, she is done for.

She feels a smile breaking out on her face. She cannot stop it. It as though her face is acting independently of the rest of her. The smile widens. Henry is looking directly into her face but she is not sure if he sees her; his eyes have a glazed, faraway look about them. And there is sweat on his forehead. She tries to convert the smile into a beatific look of ecstasy, to give the impression that she is getting as much pleasure from the whole business as he is. Meanwhile Henry trundles on.

And for a little while she is calm again. It looks as though she has the whole thing under control. But then suddenly it comes again, like a contraction in childbirth. She knows what's causing it. It's the sight of Henry and the ferocious exercise he is engaged in. When she first met him he was a sprinter – and a good one, winning medals for his club at sports meetings. Now, she estimates that apart from the walk to and from the station, morning and evening, this sex must be the only strenuous exercise he gets. He is not fit and this is far too much exertion for him. And he looks so, so ridiculous in his sweat-soaked pyjamas, up on his hands, slamming into her. And out again. And back in again. A cowboy on a bucking horse. A soldier who's committed some misdemeanour and now has to do some pointless drill over and over again. A mechanical children's toy with a wind-up apparatus on it. (Oh dear God, no.)

The laughter starts to build like a flood pushing against a dam. And now it begins to splutter out. She tries to control it in the same way one attempts to squeeze out wind when in company when what one really wants to do is a good loud explosion. She splutters again, a bubble or two of laughter escaping past her lips, the vanguard of a great wave of laughter that has now built inside her. Oh my God, she's not going to be able to control this. It's running away from her. Quite frantic now, she holds the next skitter of laughter and manages to convert it into a sigh of abandonment.

'Ohhhhh' is the sound she makes; slow and throaty.

Like a bird replying to a call from another in a distant tree, Henry utters an 'Ahhhh.'

Next she emits an extended 'Ohhhhhhhhhhh' and that seems to clear the immediate wave of laughter that was threatening to spill over the gunwales. But Henry isn't to be outdone and a sound that might have been a slow, almost painful 'Oh yes' escapes from him.

A snort of laughter now escapes from Clara and this time, despite the presence of the children next door, she causes the laughter to become a high pitched 'Ah ah ah ah' as though some exquisitely tender pain is being visited upon her. This causes Henry to begin grunting in a deep, throaty voice, each grunt coinciding with an in-stroke. He sounds like he is doing impersonations of a pig.

And now Clara thinks she can't do this for very much longer. Because now her brain is like a city under siege, assailed from all sides by The Pickwick Papers, the mechanical wind-up toy, these ridiculous sounds she hears herself making, this odd conversation of sounds that seems to have broken out between herself and her husband, and finally – the last straw, really – the pig noises. (In some ways the sounds are the most bizarre part because he is normally silent during such operations.)

And why is he taking so long? He is still on the palms of his hands and has pushed off the bedclothes, pounding away. It is starting to hurt now. And he is panting so heavily that it occurs to her he might die while inside her. What would happen then? Would his erection remain, held in rigor mortis? The thought of this just adds another impossible weight to the pressure already on her. A snort of laughter escapes from her. Frantically she manages to transform it, so that what begins as a laugh ends as a groan that might be appropriate to a state of mild discomfort or pain. Henry changes into slow, deep, painful strokes. It is as though the thought that he is hurting her has aroused him even further.

And now his panting has developed into loud gasping interspersed with sounds that might be words. He is oblivious to the noise he is making. And Clara thinks of the girls. What if he wakes them? What if one of them comes in and sees their father like this? He'll be angry and they'll be scarred for life. Clara nearly laughs again and bites her lip – actually bites it hard, painfully. But really, he is being far too loud. She needs to end this – to put everyone out of their misery.

And she knows just how to do it.

She discovered the secret quite by accident one night. It was early on in their relationship and she had been genuinely aroused and enjoying what they were doing. Her hands had been exploring his body – such a beautiful body it had been in those days – and, from the front, she had pushed her hand down between his legs and had cradled his balls in her palm. Then, on an impulse, she had pressed two of her fingertips into the place just behind his balls. The perineum, she discovered it was called afterwards when she looked it up in a medical book at the library. He had groaned spectacularly and climaxed almost immediately. And it hadn't been just that once. Any time after this when she did it, it happened.

So now she makes the move. There is no way she can get her hand down past his belly so she reaches around his back. Down across his buttocks, in the hot dampness between his splayed legs. She really has to stretch but she can feel herself nearly there. She locates his hole and then goes just beyond that. It really is a stretch. How much did he eat tonight? (Oh stop, Clara, stop, she says to herself.) Then with one more small stretch she presses in with her fingers. He groans loudly. She maintains the pressure and then she feels his buttocks tighten. That's it – she can take her fingers away now. She does and in a few moments, nature takes care of the rest.

He collapses onto her and lies there for several minutes, his breathing slowly easing. He says nothing. There was a time when she would have stroked his hair but now she lies as though in a coffin, her hands by her side. Eventually he rolls off and out of her, leaving her nightdress and face damp from his sweat and her thighs dripping. She is sore inside. Within moments he is asleep. She can freely welcome all her thoughts now – The Pickwick Papers, the image of Henry as a mechanical wind-up toy, the little moaning- whimpering conversation they had, the pig sounds, his penis erect in rigor mortis – but none of these things make her want to laugh now. Where has the laughter gone? It has drained out of her, just as she feels his semen slipping out of her now.

She presses her bunched nightdress into her groin and, holding it there with one hand, she pivots out of bed and onto the floor. She goes to the toilet and then into the bathroom. She takes off the nightdress – it is the one she keeps for such occasions – and puts it in the washing basket. She shouldn't need it again now until next Saturday night. Then she douches with a solution of baking soda. Henry has said he doesn't want any more children – that they couldn't afford another – but he has left her to sort out how to do that. She washes with scented soap and dabs on a faint hint of perfume.

Then, returning to the bedroom with its heavily breathing Henry, she takes a fresh white nightdress from the drawer and puts it on. It is the most expensive one she has. The fragrant crispness and delicate material feel exquisite against her skin. Climbing back into bed, she lies on her back. She caresses herself unhurriedly and for a long time. Then she turns her back to Henry, one leg lying flat on the sheet, the other at right angles, knee raised, and goes to the spot.
