CHAPTER 1

Moon Signs

Almost everyone knows their star sign, which is the sign where the Sun was placed at the moment of birth. If you were born on March 26th, 1950 at 10.00 am Greenwich Mean Time, you know that you are an Aries. But you may not also know that the Moon was in the sign of Cancer on that day. Your typically Aries characteristics of enthusiasm, impulsiveness, and, dare I say, aggressiveness, will definitely be modified by the more sentimental, domesticated and sometimes moody Cancer Moon.

The Moon takes roughly two and a half days to travel through each sign, and the Moon tables at the back of this book will therefore be for the 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th, etc dates of each month, giving the time of day the Moon entered each sign so that you are able to ascertain which Moon sign is applicable for you.

This makes the tables simple to follow, the only proviso being that since these times have been calculated in Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), it is necessary to adjust your own birth time to GMT if you were born in the United States, Canada, or anywhere else outside Great Britain. You will also need to make an adjustment if you were born in Great Britain during British Summer Time or in another country when Daylight Saving Time was in effect. (See here for details on the correct formula to use to discover your Moon sign.)

Even if you don't know the exact GMT time of your birth, it should still be easy for you to discover your Moon sign and then you can begin to learn all about the hidden secrets of your personality!

If you discover that both the Sun and Moon were placed in the same sign, your basic Zodiac personality will be given even greater power. Both your outer personality and the 'inner you' will be strengthened considerably, and the depth of your emotions will be immense. Naturally, depending on the sign in which this occurs, the modifications to your personality can be very different. But a Sun/Moon Gemini is probably going to be even more of a social butterfly, flitting all over the place, than if the Moon alone is in Gemini; and a Sun/Moon Capricorn will definitely be a stickler for tradition and material security.

I have also often felt that people born on a New Moon, ie with the Sun and Moon in conjunction in the same sign, are born with an extra element of good fortune, and indeed to have a New Moon on your birthday often coincides with the start of something new and beneficial in your birthday year.

To be born on a Full Moon, ie the Sun in Scorpio and the Moon in Taurus, can lead to a real conflict between the outer and inner personalities, especially as there is supposed to be something of our opposite signs in each of us and this will naturally be magnified when Sun and Moon are placed in opposition at birth. Throughout my years of charting personal horoscopes I have also found that people born on a Full Moon often come from a split home, having experienced an early divorce between their parents or the death of a parent early on, or have had at least one divorce or major break-up in their own emotional lives.

Naturally, there are also other effects to be taken into consideration – the Ascendant sign and the position of the other planets in your own personal horoscope and the aspects they all make to each other. But in any astrology book one can only generalize, and to learn more about yourself you could have an individual birthchart prepared by a professional astrologer.

However, ascertaining your Moon sign, and thus being given the opportunity to unlock the door leading to your innermost feelings, can be a fascinating introduction to learning more about your emotions.

For most people, it is our emotions which tend to lead us helter-skelter into all sorts of situations, when perhaps, if we were to sit back and analyse what we were doing, it could result in something quite different. And nowhere does this tend to be more apparent than in our emotional lives. That is why I decided to explore the possibilities of achieving happier emotional relationships (or lunar loves!) by giving you the chance to fulfil the potential offered by your Moon sign.

This book certainly isn't about negating the power of your Sun sign, but it will advise you to allow both the Sun and the Moon to work together in a balanced way, so that your own life becomes more balanced and your relationships become even more fulfilling.

Balance is exceedingly important in relationships, and when one is comparing two horoscopes for compatibility, the aspects between the Sun, Moon and Ascendant are vital. When one party's Moon is in the same sign as the other's Sun it is a beneficial conjunction, as are having both parties' Moons in the same sign, or one party's Moon close to the Ascendant sign of his or her partner. Throughout the centuries this has been considered extremely important.

Carl Jung carried out some experiments with batches of horoscopes which confirmed the above in an extremely high number of cases. Jung believed that like alchemy, astrology originates in the collective unconscious, a layer of consciousness deep below waking thought which unites all human beings.

Jung's curiosity was aroused by the ancient traditional astrological and alchemical correspondences to marriage in terms of the three conjunctions described above. He carried out a study of the horoscropes of 483 married couples to see how often these conjunctions appeared.

The results showed an unusually high number of all three Moon conjunctions. Jung examined the horoscopes in batches. The first batch of 180 marriages (360 horoscopes) revealed 10.9 percent with Sun/Moon conjunctions – a probability of 1 in 10,000. The second batch of 220 marriages (440 horoscopes) revealed 10.9 percent of Moon/Moon conjunctions – another probability of 1 in 10,000. The third batch of 83 marriages (166 horoscopes) revealed a 9.6 percent Moon/Ascendant conjunction, or a probability of 1 in 3,000.

What is more, the probability that all three conjunctions would show up in the horoscopes studied was 1 in 3,000,000,000,000. Jung said that the improbability of this being due to mere chance 'is so enormous that we are forced to take into account the existence of some factor responsible for it'.

With a subject like astrology, which has been around for so many thousands of years, one is continually learning something new about its effects on our personalities. Your Moon sign is just one facet – but a fascinating and wonderful one too!

CHAPTER 2

The Influence Of The Moon On You

As you can see, the influence of the Moon on you should never be understated. Whilst the Sun is your outward personality, the Moon is the inner you, and it has amazing influence on your feelings, instincts, reactions, and of course, your emotional life!

It's also the way you relate to you, the way you nurture yourself, the way you see yourself at the deepest possible level. Some Moon signs find it harder than others to recognize the soul level within, to get in touch with the Higher Self, to communicate on a more spiritual level and to reach that higher consciousness which is within all of us.

I have therefore compiled a quiz which, if you answer it truthfully, will show you just how strongly the power of the Moon can and does influence your life.

Some Moon signs are so strong that they will almost over-rule the Sun sign personality if that particular Sun sign portrays weaker basic characteristics. It will help you understand why a supposedly flirtatious Sun Gemini has such a romantic, idealistic personality – a Pisces Moon of course! Or your supposedly so sentimental Sun Pisces is amazingly tough, materialistic and ambitious – all due to a Capricorn Moon.

Some people are more typically Moon people than others. Cancer, for example, rules the Moon, and therefore Cancerians are invariably more sensitive to Moon phases. In America, Cancerians are often referred to by astrologers as 'Moon Children'. New Moons and Full Moons always seem to affect Cancerians more than any other sign.

The second part of the quiz gives some brief descriptions of each of the twelve Moon signs. Try to see which sounds most like you and see if you can indeed guess which Moon sign belongs to you. But it is advisable to check the Moon tables at the back of the book to verify your choice!

If you have 80 points or more, your lunar influence is very powerful, and you are therefore on the right path.

If you have over 60 and under 80 points your lunar influence is medium. You have probably begun to realize that your intuition can be a powerful guide, but why don't you start to trust it a little more?

Between 40 and 60 points your lunar influence works only occasionally, so that you're not completely sure whether to listen to your inner voice or not. You need to work on yourself more! Forget about being quite so realistic about life – your lunar influence can be a wonderful asset.

If you have less than 20 points, your lunar influence is weak, and it's definitely time to become more receptive to your innermost feelings and allow them to help you get more out of life. You're living too much on one plane and not allowing your sensitivity to shine through.

Which Moon sign are you?

If you haven't already looked at your Moon tables, choosing one of the brief descriptions which sounds most like you out of the following twelve could give you your correct Moon sign – but don't forget to check the Moon tables to verify this!

a Sparkling, imaginative, quick-witted, though not always able to stick at things for too long. An emotional will-o-the-wisp.

b A fantastic memory, emotionally invincible and often very secretive. Able to overcome difficult challenges.

c Often restless, loving freedom, definitely a 'people person' but sometimes finds it hard to display true love.

d Very loving and usually lovable! Giving and idealistic, and very, very strong willed.

e Extremely romantic with a definitely sensual side, but also practical and concerned with status.

f Dedicated in everything they undertake, but tend to question their emotions a little too much and come across as rather cool.

g Invariably optimistic – if one love affair ends another is sure to take its place! Long distance relationships often appeal to this high-minded soul.

h Loves to talk, loves to chase, and hates to be tied down too much – one of the friendliest Moon signs around but can be exhausting ...

i Can be very possessive and very psychic too. Needs stability in any relationship, definitely not a wanderer.

j Imaginative, romantic and artistic. If not careful can fall too easily for the wrong Lunar Lover if they don't listen to their inner voice.

k Tends to keep emotions under control, sometimes too much, and once true love comes along it's a serious business.

1 Another true romantic and often tougher than first appears. Likes to see beauty in everything, not just a Lunar Lover.

CHAPTER 3

The Moon ... And You

Now that you've learnt that there is more to astrology than just your Sun sign, and you've checked the position of the Moon at your birth from the tables at the back of the book, it's time to find out more about just how your Moon sign influences your emotions.

We all have our good and bad points, our ups and downs, and there is no greater influence on our emotional feelings than the Moon. It's not just a question of perhaps acting strangely at Full Moon time, or feeling very up when there is a New Moon. It's understanding that your Moon sign personality is incredibly powerful, and that a lot of it is hidden away beneath the surface. The Moon represents what you feel as against what is shown outwardly by your Sun sign.

The first part of each of the following chapters will help you to discover more about yourself and get in touch with your lunar personality. This will enable you to understand the reasons why you often feel the way you do. By allowing the Moon's influence to heighten your perception and intuition, you will also be able to achieve a whole new depth of understanding in your most important relationships.

How you react to other people and to situations is activated by the Moon in your sign. It relates to your securities, insecurities, feelings about giving and receiving love, and how instinctively you perceive the world outside.
