LOOKING FORWARD!

SLITHER NO MORE

Fargo went down the hallway to the back door. He opened it slightly and peeked out the crack. He saw a couple of privies and a rain barrel. There was no sign of Snake.

That didn’t mean he wasn’t there. Fargo opened the door a little wider, and Snake popped up from behind the rain barrel. He held the shotgun tight against his good shoulder with both hands.

Fargo slammed the door as Snake fired. The buckshot rattled off the walls of the house, and Fargo flung the door open. Snake had dropped back down behind the barrel.

Fargo shot into the barrel near the bottom. There was water in it, and it drained out the hole.

“The barrel won’t do you much good when the water’s gone, Snake,” Fargo said.

Snake jumped up, the shotgun pointed at Fargo’s midsection. This time Fargo didn’t give Snake a chance to pull the trigger. He shot him in the bridge of the nose.

Snake’s head exploded in a haze of blood and brain matter. . . .

The Trailsman

Beginnings . . . they bend the tree and they mark the man. Skye Fargo was born when he was eighteen. Terror was his midwife, vengeance his first cry. Killing spawned Skye Fargo, ruthless, cold-blooded murder. Out of the acrid smoke of gunpowder still hanging in the air, he rose, cried out a promise never forgotten.
