Overview

Modern Mushroom Growing 2020 Harvesting:

A new comprehensive book by Pieter J.C. Vedder on global mushroom cultivation in 2020. A book in which his more than 60 years of knowledge, practical and international experience, and vision about the contemporary industry are recorded. Supplemented with scientific knowledge and insights he has acquired since his previous English book, published in 1978. A book for all mushroom growers in the world, that will contribute to the further optimization of their business operations.

Pieter was the founder and principal of a school where the subject of mushroom cultivation in its full width was educated, but also subjects such as climate control, applied biology, chemistry, and economics. But above all a Training Centre where this theory was supported by a well-equipped modern instruction farm with year-round high production of top-quality mushrooms. And by this, a perfect example and instruction farm for all mushroom growers in the Netherlands and abroad.

Pieter was the driving force behind this all, a man with a mission. His book 'Modern Mushroom Growing' was published in 8 different languages. The British Growers Association awarded him for his book and the mushroom courses, with the Sinden Award and stated that the book has found a place on every progressive grower's desk in the UK. He was also a regular speaker at international conferences and was asked for various consultancy projects.

This book is an improved and more comprehensive edition of the earlier one, with all aspects of harvesting now being included. The strength of this new book is that it is written, based on the issues and questions faced by nowadays mushroom growers all over the world. It provides answers to their questions based on Pieter Vedder's more than 60 years of experience as dedicated educator, teacher, grower and international consultant with a broad network in growing practice and scientific research.

Echoing the British Growers Association, I sincerely recommend that this new book gets a place on every progressive grower's desk in the whole world.

About the Author

P.J.C. Vedder studied horticulture, and horticultural engineering at Wageningen university and also served in the Dutch army. Worked as an extension service officer for the Dutch government, helping to develop the horticultural industry in the southern part. of The Netherlands. Having an interest in the upcoming mushroom cultivation and thus became involved in mushroom research and training. Under the late Drs. Pieter Bels and Dr. Henriette Bels-Koning in Horst, I studied and worked at the Experimental Station and later was involved for many years in advisory work at mushroom farms. In 1963, I established the world's first Mushroom Training Centre in Horst and have been the principal of that institute for 20 years. My philosophy always has been, not to tell my students, what to do, but instead pairing that with the most available basic information, so that he or she knows why things have to be done in a certain situation. In 1982, I received from the British Mushroom Growers Association, the prestigious Sinden Award, in recognition of outstanding contributions to the Mushroom Industry. It states: His book 'Modern Mushroom Growing' has found a place at every progressive grower's desk. His mushroom courses at Horst have a worldwide reputation and have helped innumerable growers, young and not so young, from many countries. In August of 1983, I accepted the position of Vice President Training and Development for Campbell Soup's Mushroom Division and moved to Dublin, Georgia/USA. After work for Campbell Soup, we moved to Italy and lived and worked there for the largest mushroom farm, Funghi del Montello. Together with my wife Mariette we continued doing international mushroom consulting. All the pictures in this book are made by the author; otherwise the source is mentioned. Those that never met me in person, still have a chance for seeing me and hearing me. Born during the post WWII years as the second child of eight, and daughter of a Dutch market gardener. So, we both are born and raised with 'dirt under the fingernails', which is a big help to speak a growers' language and for understanding the difficulties growing something for a profit. After first studying fashion, in order to support the family in making all clothes for the females, as well as for others, I changed, mainly due to my best friend Ellie's influence. Her Dad had a small mushroom farm and sometimes I helped them out. I've studied and worked at the Mushroom Training Centre where I also embraced the opportunity for putting my foreign languages to good use. Being the harvest supervisor and also helping out the widowed part-time secretary in the afternoon. Always eager to learn and it has all come in handy over the years, as I became an internationally recognized expert in mushroom harvesting, post harvesting and quality control. I've got a chance for reorganizing the harvesting procedures and introduced training programs at major farms in various countries. In 1993 we both became American Citizens and since then we permanently reside in Dublin, Georgia/USA. Although retired, we never lost our interest in the Mushroom Business, so we spent time to upgrade this book, thinking it still could help numerous growers and their workers to make the right decisions. Beside the fact that we always loved what we were doing, even more important is, that we ended up with a number of friends in many countries. By working on upgrading this book, we realized quite well that there are a certain number of conditions which differ from farm to farm and even from country to country. The basics however are still the same. Therefore, we tried to offer a combination of scientific facts with a good portion of practical experience, gained over a lifetime. Pieter J. C.
