Mockingbird Finds His Voice
Mockingbird Finds His Voice is a story about a young bird finding his way.
School can be a difficult environment for anyone to adjust to, even birds.
When we meet Kevin he is bored, waiting in line, unable to see what's happening because he's the smallest in his class. Perhaps not surprisingly, he "acts out" and is sent to the Guidance Counselor.
But when he visits Master Crane, he is not punished, but instead is given a task to keep his mind occupied when he might otherwise drift off. He is tasked to learn to mimic voices, and with his friends' help, he works to master the cadence and melody used by every student in his class. His natural gifts come to the fore, and as this engagement spills over into his other school work, he is soon thriving in school.
It is a story about learning and friendship, perseverance and kindness.
Ultimately is is a story about learning to grow and become yourself.

About the Author

Harlan Mathieu has been fascinated with birds since someone first told him that malarkey about catching them by putting salt on their tails. His love of Mockingbirds was first demonstrated when on a trip to Chicago, when he returned with one memento, a “mockingbird call” from the Brookfield Zoo, which produced ten different birdsongs.
These days he lives down the street from a mockingbird colony, which he visits with daily; as he travels to and from his job teaching visual arts to young children in the New York City Schools.
