About the Author

Laura's knitting design and love of teaching have been influenced at every stage of her life. She grew up sewing and knitting a bit with a mother who insisted on meticulous finishes. In college, she majored in engineering, and learned to knit sweaters. After working as a Project Manager in engineering design, she returned to the classroom, teaching high school math and writing and teaching "Introduction to Engineering" for a magnet program. Her knitting, sewing and teaching continued as she married, had children, and moved many times, including to Australia and Brazil. When her family finally settled in Washington, DC, her focus turned to knitting. At first she was primarily knitting mittens for the homeless, but then designed a blanket as a wedding gift, learned to knit lace, and discovered Socks Soar on Circular Needles. Cat Bordi opened her eyes to the possibility of reengineering knitting techniques and möbius! As Laura started pushing her own knitting boundaries, she was also busily teaching the scouts and her daughter's 6th grade class to knit, and developing methods to help friends improve and expand their knitting skills.
In 2012, she created her company, CathedralKnits. To Laura, cathedrals represent some of the cutting edge technology of their time (the Middle Ages), intricate mathematical calculations, exquisite craftsmanship, and the willingness to attempt something incredibly challenging. Many people don't see any of that, just beauty, and that makes them equally happy. Her goals are to push the boundaries of what can currently be knit, and then enthusiastically and engagingly to guide others to their own knitting success. Visit her website at CathedralKnits.com.
