Miracle on Second Avenue is a short, carefully researched documentary book written in a you-are-there style, that catalogs the start and growth of the Hare Krishna movement. Miracle on Second Avenue won the 2012 National Indie Excellence Award for Biography. The work is a memoir of Mukunda Goswami, one of the pioneers of the religious group that is now known throughout the world formally as the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON). Miracle is a series of historical events that include the movement's founder, A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami, and his interactions on two continents with the author over the three-year period from August 1966 until December 1969.

About the Author

Mukunda Goswami writer, researcher, editor, and one of the earliest members of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness, was its Director of Communications from 1985 through 1998. One of ISKCON’s Governing Body Commissioners for ten years, he is a monk who has lectured in 38 countries and published several newspaper and magazine articles on contemporary issues. He lives in New Zealand, where he continues writing and researching future books.

I had a hard time putting it down and was feeling lost when I findished reading. I gave my copy to one devotee who had lost his enthusiasm for preaching. He got so excited and claimed it had changed his life. He is recommended it to his friends and is reading it again. The writing is so peronal that it is hard to describe. The descriptions of how they started the movement in Sanfrancisco I found to be most “miraculous”. Shyamasundara, Malati, Yamuna, and Guru dad, excpet for Yamuna

This book should come with a caution label:"Warning: If you pick up this book, you will not be able to put it down".I purchased an advance copy in Mayapur and would pick it up in the evening thinking "I will read for half an hour and then go to bed".The next thing I would know, it would be two hours later and I still did not want to stop reading....Mukunda Maharaja has done history a great service by presenting this insightful and deeply endearing portrait of Srila Prabhupada.
