Mind Tryst

Still reeling from her young son's death, Jackie Sheppard retreats to a small town in the Colorado Rockies. Comforted that no one knows of her tragic past, she's thrilled to take a job at family law firm, where she meets Tom, the local carpenter. Jackie's distrust of others hinders their relationship, but they slowly build a budding romance.

However, as she begins to settle into her new life, disturbing things start happening to Jackie--objects are moved around her house, an indentation of a body appears on her freshly made bed, and a bouquet of wildflowers are inexplicably left by her door. With eccentric residents in the town, Jackie dismisses the oddities, but as Tom's checkered background reveals that his wife and child were murdered, Jackie believes she may be the next target of a sadistic killer.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly

The veteran author of historical novels ( Woman's Own ), Carr now moves into the psychothriller genre with a seamless suspense novel that guarantees readers edge-of-the-seat drama. After Jackie Sheppard's 11-year-old son is killed in a car accident, the L.A. divorcee and lawyer tries to make a new life for herself in a small Colorado mountain town. There she meets Tom Wahl, a carpenter with a tragic past of his own. Sensing a kindred spirit and eager for a companion, Jackie becomes involved with Tom only to suspect that he is not at all the man he seems. When she attempts to end the relationship, Tom becomes pathologically obsessive and Jackie has no choice but to enlist the help of the local sheriff, Bodge Scully. A vividly drawn, endearing lawman, Scully is soon joined by Jackie's ex-husband and good friend, a private investigator, in the quest to find out just who Tom Wahl really is. Ultimately, though, it is Jackie who must save herself in a knockout denouement. Literary Guild selection. (Feb.)

Library Journal

Jackie Sheppard moves from Los Angeles to Coleman, Colorado to get away from the bitter memories of her son who was 11 when he was killed while riding his bicycle. In allowing herself to begin a relationship with handyman Tom Wahl she is starting a new life for herself. But then strange things happen. Jackie finds someone has been on her bed while she was out of town. She finds flowers by the back door but no clue as to who left them. Then Tom performs a marathon sexual event for Jackie which could have turned ugly. And he seems to have been the primary suspect in the murder of his wife and daughter several years before. Carr, author of many historical novels and romances, has created strong characters for a good story, but the suspense is a bit off kilter. Everyone knows who the bad guy is. They just don't know what he will do next, and that is not enough to make an edge-of-the-chair thriller.-- Jo Ann Vicarel, Cleveland Heights-University Heights P.L., Ohio
