Purpose: The purpose is to highlight significant work that extends King's conceptual system and her theory of goal attainment. It focuses mainly on middle range theories, but other seminal works are included.
Audience: The audience includes students at the master's and doctoral level as well as practicing nurses who want to test or develop theory in their practice.
Features: The 18 chapters are divided into three parts. Part I discusses the foundations of King's work and how theories build on that work; part II presents several middle range theories derived from King's work; and part III looks at post-middle range theory development.
Assessment: This book looks at theory development in a unique way. Any scholar who has used or has been interested in King's Theory of Goal Attainment would benefit from reading how numerous middle-range theories were based on King's conceptual system. It provides a fresh look at the development and testing of nursing knowledge and includes new middle-range theories from refereed publications as well as master's theses and doctoral dissertations. It is a very interesting but rigorous read.
