This is a brief, well-written, and thorough discussion of the microanatomy and function of the spleen. The major purpose of this monograph is to present an accurate, technically sound, and authoritative discussion of the microanatomy and function of the human spleen in comparison to the widely studied rat spleen. The characteristics of the rat spleen differ significantly from the human spleen not only because of the obvious species difference, but also due to the extensive inbreeding of laboratory rats. This is a very worthwhile objective and the authors accomplish their goals admirably. This monograph will be useful and interesting to a wide range of individuals from medical and graduate students to practicing physicians and active researchers in many fields. The level at which it is written is well suited to a broad range of readers. The authors are quite expert in this field. The authors use a combined approach of conventional light microscope histology and immunohistochemistry to characterize the location and distribution of nearly all the known cells of the spleen. This careful and thorough analysis provides a number of important insights into significant characteristics of the human spleen in comparison to the rat spleen. There are a number of informative, high quality color plates in which these distinctions are illustrated. The index is a bit too brief. The major shortcoming is the absence of any ultrastructural information, either of the authors' own work or what is found in the literature. This monograph is a very well done and valuable contribution to the basic understanding of the structure and function of the human spleen. It is an original and excellentcontribution to the medical literature. It will be of interest to many students, practitioners, and researchers in many fields of the life sciences.
