Purpose: The authors aim to summarize the vast literature on microalbuminuria in diabetes and nondiabetic disorders.
Audience: It is intended for those studying diabetes and its complications. As the authors imply, the audience is mainly serious academicians.
Features: This book covers the measurement and definition of microalbuminuria, various confounding factors which influence it, its natural history in diabetes, its association with cardiovascular disease and a possible biologic mechanism for this, and its role in patient management. Its relevance in non-diabetes is a worthy point, and discussion of its measurement and definition is succinct and helpful. However, the longest chapter, which details the associations between microalbuminuria and cardiovascular risk factors, is confusing. Because this area is inherently complicated, the exhaustive regurgitation of this data without sufficient summarization or explanation is tedious. Those without a thorough knowledge of lipid epidemiology have no hope of following parts of this discussion.
Assessment: Although this book addresses a quite relevant subject, its readability is limited by the authors' excessive focus on epidemiologic associations out of proportion to the question of causality or biologic mechanism. This book would benefit from more author opinion and specific management recommendations in the attempt to generate some consensus.
