Arthur Conan Doyle (1859–1930) was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, the eldest son of Roman Catholic parents.  He is best known for creating the oft-quoted detective-hero Sherlock Holmes, the skillful sleuth of The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. A doctor as well as a writer, Doyle was bestowed the title of Knight bachelor in 1902.
