Description: This book is focused in its entirety on assessment of all aspects of the lower extremity. As the author points out, there are any number of books that deal with specific elements of the lower extremity, but few are as all encompassing in their approach as this one.
Purpose: Although the book does a fine job of providing a comprehensive approach to lower extremity assessment, some areas are weak. For example, the section on the social and medical history is a little too chatty, and would not be sufficient to obtain a comprehensive history and physical examination for presurgical clearance.
Audience: While aimed primarily at podiatrists, and perhaps more specifically those in the U.K., the book will appeal to a broader audience, both medical and nonmedical.
Features: The book is well organized and logically laid out, covering general assessment before physical assessment. Short case studies that show the significance of a specific point raised during assessment are helpful to draw readers' attention. Major points in each chapter are summarized in boxes, and the references are comprehensive and current.
Assessment: This book has few direct competitors. It is not likely to find as much popularity in the U.S., which is given to a broader scope of podiatric practice. However, it will find some popularity with U.S. audiences and, given the amount of new information that has come to light regarding assessment since the book was first published, this third edition is justified.
