CHAPTER 1

Once a upon a time mermaids ruled Mars.

Mars is the fourth planet from the sun.

It has two moons, lots of mountains and even volcanoes.

Water would fill the many craters on the surface of the planet and the mermaids would splash around in the beautiful pools all day.

They would take long baths, splishing and splashing around.

They loved to shower, too. They would spend hours and hours in the showers.

They would brush their teeth until they sparkled like pearls. And they would let the water flow from the faucet, watching it swirl and swirl.

The mermaids also loved the sound of the water as it flushed down the toilet. Even after blowing their nose with a single tissue, they'd crumple it and flush it!

Every day the mermaids would water their lush garden plants and they'd bring a hose around every corner of the planet.

The mermaids loved water so much, they'd use it every day. But one day, the craters went dry and all the water went away.

The water stopped flowing from the shower, the tub, the faucets and even the hose! The mermaids had used up all the water and they didn't know where to go.

The mermaids needed water to live. They're just like you and me. So they climbed into their rocket ship and came to Earth where there was plenty of water in the oceans, rivers and seas.

Today they live a wonderful life right here on Earth. But they hope we don't make the same mistakes they did. They hope we learn how to conserve.
