Risleigh Caulfield is back but he's not here for Chandra, someone wants him dead and the only people he can trust to assist him are Chandra's family. He still lives with the fear that he'll harm Chandra again, so he goes to her son Kennon for help.
Kennon knows only the bare minimum of what took place between his mother and Risleigh during the war but it's enough for him to harbor a deep hatred of the man. He has no desire to help but at his mother's insistence, he reluctantly agrees to help Risleigh.
The two travel a winding road as they search for the person who is making a bid to take Ris out. Whoever it is, they have money to spare and the power to summon demons to do their dirty work.
The journey forces Risleigh to take a trip down memory lane and he must face the evil he's done.
