Melaynie's Masquerade
What's a girl going to do when she wants adventure and in the 16th century men have all the fun? Melaynie Morgan is independent minded and is frustrated with the elaborate dresses expected of her. She doesn't want a marriage and household duties. She refuses to let her conventional background in Plymouth, England, deter her and she disguises herself as a captain's boy to sail off with privateer Francis Drake to plunder Spanish treasure in the exotic Caribbean. Queen Elizabeth's Protestant England is in an undeclared war with King Philip's Catholic Spain. Drake is waging his own private war with Spain and enjoying the opportunity to steal gold and silver for himself and his Queen.
In this historical fiction tale based on true events, Melaynie finds more than she bargained for during her year in the tropics serving Drake while keeping her secret. There's disease, death and danger before she falls in love with a dashing Spaniard and forges a friendship with an escaped African slave. She returns to England wiser but unaware she's pregnant. Her daughter Joan grows up unaware of her true parentage until the Spanish Armada brings a bittersweet and surprising reunion.

About the Author

Victoria Giraud has had a long career in journalism and book editing in the Southern California area. Her love of adventure and history came from growing up as an Army brat and living in such countries as Libya and Germany. Her newspaper career has been a varied one: from being an editor to writing a weekly column about notable people and reviewing plays for a Los Angeles daily paper. In the past decade she has turned her attention to a bi-weekly blog, Words on My Mind, researching and writing Melaynie's Masquerade, and writing a series of small autobiographical books.
