American born preacher Johnnie Washington was a notable singer during gospel music's golden era. He left the concert stage and began preaching on the street corners of New York City. He acquired a shuttered movie palace, the 3,500 seat Loews Valencia, and restored it for his church headquarters. Capacity crowds filled the auditorium to witness his services each week.
