Description: This boxed set of cards presents current information on administering over 1,000 drugs, including drug names, class, action, adverse reactions, nursing considerations, and patient dosing. It includes a ring to keep up to 30 cards for on-the-go use. It is analogous to the Nursing 2018 Drug Handbook, 38th edition (Wolters Kluwer, 2018).
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a handy study resource for nursing students and an excellent reference for nurses. The drug information is reviewed by experts in nursing and pharmacology.
Audience: Because they include nursing interventions, these drug cards are intended for nursing students. However, anyone who needs to know about and study medications can use this resource.
Features: The drug cards contain all the information needed for medication administration. The advantages of these cards over a drug handbook are that they are easy to use as study guides. Since drug cards are usually made by nursing students for their clinical experience, these are an excellent resource. The cards include the drug class, the usual dose, potential adverse reactions, the sound alike/look-a-like meds, nursing interventions, mechanism of action, and patient assessments.
Assessment: This method of providing information is likely to be used only by nursing students currently in a pharmacology class or a clinical rotation. Instead of carrying a heavy drug book to a rotation, students can attach the cards they need to the ring and carry it with them. Students also could use these cards very effectively to study for NCLEX, since they lend themselves to group study with students taking turns quizzing each other. I would think the audience is limited by how individual students learn.
