Description: This medical-surgical nursing book covers anatomy and physiology with an outline of structure and function, followed by the appropriate nursing process along with diagnostic test results and treatments, including medications. Chapters conclude with discussions of common diseases and patient education suggestions. An accompanying website has NCLEX questions and case studies. This update of the 2011 edition is necessary as evidence-based practices emerge.
Purpose: The authors note that medical-surgical nursing is complex and covers many subspecialties, so the objectives are to offer a reliable, easy to understand resource to practicing nurses and nursing students. This book presents the majority of the information needed to care for medical-surgical patients in various settings. The information is presented in a bullet format and covers all aspects nurses may consider, including pointers on documentation.
Audience: The intended audience includes nursing students, practicing nurses, and nurses returning to the profession, but licensed practical nurses and students also may benefit. Nurses considering sitting for the medical-surgical certification exam could use this as a study resource, and faculty exploring ways to explain and discuss medical-surgical topics may find it useful to share some of the memory tips with students. The book also could be useful for advanced practice nurses in an inpatient setting to keep up with evidence-based practice for the appropriate nursing care for various disease processes. The authors are credible with advanced degrees and certifications.
Features: The book begins with an overview of the nursing process then goes into broad basic concepts of nursing that cover many disease processes. Later chapters discuss common disease process by body system. The information is presented in bullet format with practical tips for patient teaching. The memory tips and the evidence-based practice pointers are excellent sources for nurses to refer to or use to remember a concept. The chapters that discuss disease processes start with a brief review of anatomy and physiology, which is a great way to apply the nursing process. Another helpful feature presents tips about what to do in an emergency.
Assessment: This is a book I would acquire and use as a reference. It is not a scholarly reference, but that is not its purpose. It is a hands-on resource for practicing nurses and students. The NCLEX questions are great for students and the case studies are a great learning tool for all practicing nurses. Both of these tools can help readers apply the concepts presented in the chapters.
