Description: This book covers medical-surgical concepts for nurses, including all the body systems as well as end-of-life care and perioperative care. This book has many unique structural elements, including a memory jogger section to help remember important details, illustrations for emergency situations, and several cartoons that highlight important points. Another feature gives practical patient teaching tips. This is a fifth edition, with the fourth edition published in 2017.
Purpose: The purpose of the book is to serve as a reference for med-surg nursing practice in a variety of settings. These are very worthy objectives, as med-surg nursing has become very complex. In some cases, patients will be dealing with several chronic diseases with very complex etiology, so nurses require a vast set of clinical skills to care for these types of patients. The book meets the objectives as it covers the basis of med-surg nursing practice, including the nursing process. It also covers disease processes by systems including etiology, pathophysiology, clinical manifestations, diagnosis, and treatments. There are additional chapters covering perioperative nursing and end-of-life care. There are also chapters on fluid and electrolyte balance with acid/base balance, pain management, cancer care, and care of the obese patient. The book is written in an easy-to-follow format that can clarify complex med-surg care.
Audience: The book is written for practicing nurses, student nurses, and nursing faculty. It will also be useful for people returning to nursing who need a refresher. The author makes it a point that nurses in all areas of practice require med-surg skills to some degree. For example, if a patient in labor is obese, has high blood pressure, or has gestational diabetes, this book can be an important reference. The book can be used for on-hand reference, but it can also be utilized for teaching. The book meets the goal of its intended audience. The authors are both credible as MSN- and DNP-prepared nursing faculty. I would expect to see certification as a med-surg nurse, but those credentials are not evident. The publication has a good reputation with faculty and students alike. I have used the book to clarify concepts in my own mind and to assist clarification with students.
Features: The book covers all med-surg concepts organized by body system. It covers concepts and disorders for 13 body systems, with additional chapters on the nursing process, perioperative care, pain management, cancer, end-of-life care, obesity, and gerontology. Each chapter follows the same format, providing a familiar structure that can be followed easily. The wording is easy to read with bullet points highlighting important ideas. The system chapter starts with a review of anatomy and physiology and assessment. Clinical manifestations are included along with diagnostic and treatments for the disorder. The graphic box features make it easy to grasp some important concepts without reading every word. EBP practice is evident along with tips for patient education. Emergency situations are highlighted for easy identification. There are quick quizzes provided to review the comprehension of the material in the chapter. The way color is used throughout the book keeps it interesting and helps readers' eyes grasp important concepts quickly. The one shortcoming of the book is the lack of a section on medications used to treat various disorders. A section on medications with action and side effects would round out this book.
Assessment: This book is an excellent resource for medical-surgical concepts and disease processes. The only thing that it needs is an additional resource on medications. It is lighthearted, easy to read, and with the coloring and the graphics it can maintain readers' attention for a longer period of time. It is a great med-surg resource in a condensed framework. If more information is needed after reading this book , it at least sets a foundation for basic understanding of the concepts. This is an updated edition, and it has added some great chapters to round out the concepts covered in the realm of med-surg nursing. There are not many comparable titles in the field of med-surg nursing that come to mind. The other med-surg books are very heavy, not only in weight but in the density of its contents. They are necessary for an in-depth picture, but this resource has a great format to get information quickly and easily. The easy-to-follow instructions are a great feature. The format makes it easy to follow and remember the concepts for future use.
