Description: This book deals with numerous ways a bone and bone-implant interface can be tested by mechanical methods.
Purpose: The purpose is to teach basic mechanical principles and to advise anyone contemplating mechanical testing of a bone specimen. These objectives are fully met by the authors.
Audience: The book is written for skeletal researchers and technicians. These include orthopedists, dentists, biomedical and mechanical engineers and trainees. Both editors are from the Medical University of South Carolina and have published extensively on this subject. Dr. An has edited other books such as Animal Models in Orthopaedic Research (CRC Press, 1999) and Handbook of Bacterial Adhesion Principles, Methods and Applications (Humana Press, 2000).
Features: The book is divided into three sections. In section one, General Considerations, the reader is exposed to basic concepts such as bone anatomy, physiology, mechanical properties, and general bone testing methods. In section two, detailed methods of mechanical testing of bone are developed for different tests. The tests range from the familiar subjects of tensile, compression, bending, and torsional tests to the sophisticated methods with ultrasound, scanning acoustic microscope, and peripheral quantitative computed tomography. Section three covers the different methods of mechanical testing of the bone-implant interface. Screw pullout and stability of implant components are covered in some detail. Relevant figures and tables are in each chapter. The references are extensive and current.
Assessment: Bone and cartilage research can be divided into two areas: biology and biomechanics. Recently there has been a growing emphasis on biology with the stress on molecular biology and tissue engineering. However, the ability of bone cells and tissue to function properly in their environment depends ultimately on their mechanical properties to withstand the stresses created by activities of daily living. Herein lies the importance of mechanical testing, which is eloquently elucidated in this important work. This book is a most useful resource for anyone contemplating mechanical testing of bone.
