Description: This first edition book provides detailed descriptions of animal preparations used to study cardiac function. The preparations described are isolated atria, isolated papillary muscle, Langendorff, working heart, right ventricular, and the in vivo conscious rat model. Descriptions include surgical techniques, equipment requirements, composition of perfusion solutions, calculations and applications.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide the investigator with a detailed "recipe book" for applying any one of these preparations to his or her research. The objective is very worthy in that by providing details that frequently are not provided in original research publications, the investigator will be able to avoid time-consuming errors. The author and contributors have met their objective.
Audience: The book is written for persons actively engaged in animal cardiovascular biological research. It is equally comprehensible for the laboratory assistant and the senior research scientist who will be using these methodologies for the first time. The author(s) of each chapter are experienced in the use of that preparation as evidenced by their publications in peer reviewed journals.
Features: The equipment and surgical procedure illustrations are particularly useful. The authors are concise in their selection of pertinent references. The exterior and interior appearance of the book is satisfactory and the index is appropriate.
Assessment: The investigator who has little or no experience in using one of these heart preparations will find this book very useful. Attention to the details relating to equipment, perfuming solutions, surgical techniques, and experimental protocol will enable the investigator to avoid many time-consuming errors. It would be a valuable resource in any biomedical library.
