Description: This set of flashcards contains comprehensive information on the 300 drugs most commonly prescribed in the United States. Each card has a picture of the drug and presents information about it using a combination of bulleted, paragraph, and grid formats.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide students and clinicians with a readily available, easily readable format to review the top 300 most commonly prescribed drugs. The first few detail how each card is constructed. This type of product is needed, because despite all of the technology clinicians have at their disposal, old-school tactics such as using flashcards can encourage understanding in a more meaningful way.
Audience: The cards are targeted at anyone who works with these drugs — certainly both students and practitioners can benefit. It appears most suitable for clinicians who require a general knowledge of many different types of drugs, such as nurses, pharmacists, and prescribers. This product clearly meets the needs of these groups as it is general enough to reach a large number of prescribers and clinicians. The two authors are well-respected professors of pharmacy.
Features: This set of flashcards has many desirable features. First, the cards are easy to read and pleasing to the eye, and are full of information. Each card contains such information as medication name, class, dosage forms, labeled and off-label uses, and mechanism of action. The cards are well organized, starting with dosage forms and dosing of each drug on the front of the card, and other supplementary information such as monitoring parameters on the back. Additional cards contain equations, tables, and guideline summaries, such as JNC 8. Each card is clearly written in easy-to-understand parlance. Based on the fact that these cards are not designed to be overly comprehensive as compared to references such as Drug Facts and Comparisons (Wolters Kluwer) or AHFS Drug Information (ASHP), the degree of thoroughness is more than sufficient.
Assessment: This is a high-quality product that is very useful to its audience. As new drugs are coming out constantly, and prescribing patterns change every couple of years, this updated version is needed.
