Overview

Distributed by the University of Nebraska Press for Caxton Press

On February 2, 1966 the Republican candidate for Idaho's 1st Congressional District seat died in a norht Idaho plane crash.  At the time, no one would have predicted that the tragedy would trigger a career that would make a young Idaho attorney one of the state's best known and loved political figures of the 20th century.

Jim McClure’s political career spanned sixteen years, six presidencies, and was marked by a reputation for statesmanship and even-handed bipartisanship. William Smallwood’s extensive interviews with the McClure family, friends, key staff members, reporters, and adversaries gives readers new insights into Idaho politics during one of the most important eras in the state’s history.
