About the Author

George Brinton McClellan (1826-1885) was born in Philadelphia. He graduated from West Point in 1846, joining the Army Corps of Engineers and serving in the Mexican War. After years of service, he decided to quit and focus on railroad assessment. But he volunteered to rejoin for the Civil War. In 1864 he ran against Lincoln for President; he was never president but was elected governor of New Jersey in 1878.
