About the Author

Lorraine Doucette has been an educator for over 30 years and has also practiced as a medical technologist. She developed the MLT program at Anne Arundel Community College, and she is currently an associate professor and program director for the MLS program at the University of Maryland School of Medicine.

Description: This is the fourth edition of a book on the basic mathematics applicable to clinical laboratory operations. The previous edition was published in 2016.
Purpose: The purpose is to explain the math associated with clinical laboratory operations. The book meets these most worthy objectives well. The website appears to have only hyperlinks to the problems/problems with answers. From this perspective, it did not add value.
Audience: The book is intended for students struggling with the math associated with the clinical laboratory, as a reference and refresher for laboratory personnel comfortable with math who might want a review of basic concepts, and staff in a physician office laboratory or clinic who may not have received formal training in laboratory math. This is a broad and diverse audience, and the book definitely meets the needs of all. The author is a recognized expert.
Features: This truly is a compendium of mathematics for the clinical laboratory. It starts with a review of basic arithmetic functions and mathematical conventional practices, and then moves on to individual chapters focusing on use of math in each of the clinical laboratory functional areas (e.g., chemistry, hematology, microbiology, etc.). I was favorably impressed by the clarity and accessibility of the writing — it is welcoming and not scary like common treatises on math. A big win - finally, I have a definitive reference to settle our usual (heated) discussions around dilutions to clarify the use of the terms "dilutions versus ratios" (chapter 4). I loved the full detail on calculations — moving step by step through complex formulae. A few wishes to consider for the next edition: a) in chapter 4 and 10 on dilutions, consider including a brief discussion of the advantages of serial versus parallel dilutions as the former is subject to propagation of an error to downstream dilutions; b) in chapter 7 on modified MDRD equation, discuss the controversy around correction factor for the "African American"; c) in chapter 8 on INR, emphasize the PT mean is a geometric mean (and describe how to obtain a geometric mean); d) in chapter 14 on CLSI references, update with current versions (e.g., C28-Ac3 cited is now EP28-A3c); and e) in appendix 14-c, include an introductory statement as this table is simply listed as "F.95". A final wish for the next edition — a new appendix containing a single list of commonly used equations throughout the entire clinical laboratory. It would be wonderful to have a single page resource to include in a relevant clinical laboratory policy and procedure manual directed at calculated values.
Assessment: This is a fantastic book covering pretty much all applications of math in the clinical laboratory. This is the reference you need to settle those many differing opinions on how to perform the actual math for various calculated laboratory values.
