Description: This book is part of the Master Techniques in Orthopaedic Surgery series, long established as one of the premier references for topics in orthopedics, which until now did not have a volume dedicated to sports medicine techniques. The goal of the series has always been to create a definitive reference authored by respected masters who are leaders in the field. For a book on sports medicine, who else would you turn to as editor except Freddie Fu?
Purpose: The purpose is to create a comprehensive overview of the pathology and current treatments, including new advances and novel approaches, for disorders of the shoulder, hip, knee, ankle, and foot in sports medicine. To achieve this goal, Dr. Fu has gathered numerous masters to write the 54 chapters. Put it all together, and they have created a wonderful go-to reference for the most important and common techniques used in the field of sports medicine.
Audience: I am confident that residents in training, general orthopedic surgeons, and established orthopedic sports medicine specialists will flock to this book and make it one of the most used in their libraries. This is a really great series and this is the best book I have seen in the series. Dr. Fu is internationally recognized as a leader in sports medicine and has brought together an impressive group of contributors who are leaders and innovators in their specific areas.
Features: As expected, the book is organized anatomically and the image quality and line drawings are excellent. The images make it possible to perform these procedures with a high probability of success based on the guidelines and coaching of the authors in each chapter. If I had one request of the publishers, it would be to use a slightly larger font for the text. However, this is a problem easily addressed with the online version that is part of the book purchase.
Assessment: Over the years, I have had the opportunity to review hundreds of books, a great many of them focused on sports medicine and sports related techniques. This book is clearly in its own class. It is truly excellent. You will love having this in your personal library and it is a MUST for every institutional library.
