K-Gr 3—With its basic explanation of observable properties of matter, this series could be used as an introduction for lower elementary grades or a review for intermediate grades. Each spread features a page with a few short sentences and a full-page photo illustrating the text. For instance, Length and Width mentions that length can change, then shows a photo of a new pencil next to one that has been shortened by sharpening. The clear images relate directly to the text, supporting factual comprehension. Each property is defined, along with how it is measured or described, and common examples are given—a spoon is smooth, a feather is light, etc. All the examples are everyday items, making it easy for readers to form mental connections with their own experiences. VERDICT This series is excellent for developing observation skills and introducing the concept of measuring and comparing physical attributes.
