Martinu: Cello Sonatas

Overview

The cello sonatas of Bohuslav Martinu are wonderful pieces, not as often played as they should be. They have many instantly appealing features, starting with gorgeous melodies in the slow movements, yet their textures are complex, and a good performance relies on players with a keen sense of how to balance the two parts. This they receive here from cellist Johannes Moser and pianist Andrei Korobeinikov. Sample the first movement of the Cello Sonata No. 2, placed at the beginning probably because of its serious, dark tone; the work took shape as the threat of World War II was gathering. Hear how subtly Moser handles the entrance of the cello after the sinuous and ominous opening piano material. The presence of the Cello Sonata No. 3, a warm, luminous work of Martinu's final period, is also noteworthy. Moser has a lyrical mode that is perfectly suited to this joyous work, which could fit on any 20th century chamber recital. These are simply state-of-the-art recordings of the Martinu cello sonatas and are likely to remain so for some time. ~ James Manheim
