And these last 10 years he has fought like a lion to save himself – as he twice faced down cancer and survived. His battle to save his own life has been an inspiration to all who have known him, and all of those who watched him prove himself one of the best goalkeepers in Ireland through the 90s.

Martin McHugh was goalkeeper in 1994 when Leitrim enjoyed their most historic year, winning the Connacht title under John O'Mahony – and he never retired. At 50 years of age, he is still keeping goal and teaming up with men half of his age
