A good introduction to Faulkner, this book of literary criticiam follows motifs of recurring actions, such as - unlikely as it sounds - "moving, burning, squatting, eating and ultimately marking." That is, how Faulkner uses imagistic language to leave "milestones" and "deathless footnotes." Through a close look at the recurring language, the author detects clusters that reveal style, message, and how a symbol evolves.

Some of the chapter titles are "Thematics," "Movement," "Marks," "Malevolence," and "Impermanence." Suffuse with lively quotations from the books, the language is easily accessible yet closely researched. It has been recommended reading in university classes in Romania.

"Marking Time with Faulkner" started life as a Columbia University Master's thesis under the supervision of poet/critic Dr. John Unterecker (author of "Voyager: A Life of Hart Crane").
