Overview

Margaret's Christmas Cookies is a holiday chapter book for middle-grade readers.

In spite of young Margaret's busy responsibilities as caregiver for her twin brothers, she plans to surprise her mother by creating the holiday dinner dessert. Five special cookies will be baked while Mother is working on the day before Christmas; one for each of them and one for Santa.

But something unexpected happens that same afternoon when she takes her brothers to the grocery store across the street from their apartment.

It has grown very cold cold and rainy as they leave the store to return home. Suddenly, the children discover an elderly lady who has fallen down on the wet sidewalk.

The store has closed, and the parking lot is nearly empty. With few options, Margaret invites the woman come home with them so that she can warm up and use their telephone.

Margaret makes cocoa and serves Mrs. King one of the five cookies, knowing as she does so that there will no longer be enough left for her intended surprise.

However, Christmas is not spoiled--quite the contrary--they all learn something important about the value of caring and love.

This story has gentle, likeable characters with realistic problems. Its lesson about gifts is subtly tied to the real story of Christmas and its best Gift of all time.

About the Author

As a child growing up in cozy little town on the Missouri River of South Dakota, Lynda explored her early passion for writing and art by creating stories and poems. She even attempted one novel on theme paper and kept it carefully hidden on a high dusty shelf in her bedroom.

A resident of Arizona for many years now, she lives with her husband and their black and white cat, Topper. Two grown-up daughters have homes and families of their own in other places.

With two degrees in Elementary Ed, Lynda loved teaching in grades 1,2,3,4, and 5 of public schools for twenty-one years. Even after retirement she continued to work with students in a reading intervention program.

...And throughout her adult life she wrote, painted, and revised her stories. At last, she began to realize that she owned a desk full of ideas, problems, and children who lived only in her imagination.

Books without readers are a waste of joy and inspiration!

Ebooks offered Lynda's stories an audience, and it completed the communication cycle that sometimes had begun with a germ of an idea many years before. She has published eight, and they are currently available.

And five of them are also in paperback.
