About the Author

Edward F. Wright, DDS, MS, MAGD, is a professor at the University of Texas Health Science Center-San Antonio (UTHSCSA). He completed a one-year general dentistry residency and the University of Minnesota’s two-year TMJ and Craniofacial Pain Fellowship. He taught TMD diagnosis and treatment to more than 100 U.S. Air Force residents in general dentistry, orthodontics, periodontics, and prosthodontics. Upon retiring from the Armed Forces, he completed a two-year research fellowship in TMD diagnosis and treatment at the South Texas Veterans Health Care System and taught TMD diagnosis and treatment to their general dentistry residents. He is now UTHSCSA’s Course Director for their predoctoral dental students’ TMD Course and Dental Anatomy and Occlusion Course, and teaches TMD to the school’s general dentistry, orthodontics, periodontics, and prosthodontics residents. Dr. Wright is the primary author of more than 30 journal articles.

Description: This overview of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) focuses on the evidence-based diagnosis and multidisciplinary treatment for most people with TMD problems. The book works to simplify the topic with guidelines to rule out other disorders that might mimic TMD. Each chapter includes FAQs, quick consults, technical tips for evaluation, and techniques to treat various complications. Previous editions were published in 2010 and 2005.
Purpose: The TMD patient is often very challenging to treat in the regular dental setting. The purpose of this book is to simplify the complexities of TMD for ease of clinical understanding and application, as well as to integrate the scientific literature, clinical trials, and clinical experiences into an effective strategy. In addition, the book attempts to provide a systematic guide on how to most effectively diagnose and treat various types of TMD patients.
Audience: The author aims this book at general dentists, postgraduate residents, and students, but it is written at a level that makes it useful as a reference for other practitioners who may be involved with the management of patients with pain of the head, neck, and face. The author has been an educator and trained in temporomandibular joint and craniofacial pain.
