Description: This manual outlines routine antepartum, peripartum, intrapartum, and postpartum care, covering all facets of care including background, evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of both maternal and fetal complications. This edition is designed in an outline fashion with the notion that it will be pertinent to both paper and electronic media. The previous edition was published in 2000.
Purpose: This book is intended as a quick, reliable source of information for all levels of obstetric practitioners to aid in making clinical decisions. Books such as these are practical, condensed sources of accessible and straightforward information. This allows its use as a quick reference while on the job. While the manual may provide obstetric practitioners with highlights of various diseases encountered in practice, it tends to be more of an outline of issues relevant to specific clinical scenarios. It thus serves as an excellent outline of care but at times can be vague regarding specific treatment plans. When it comes to acute care of the patient, specific regimens regarding technique or dosages are not stated.
Audience: The author targets all levels of obstetric practitioners in addition to nurses and students. These audiences are largely accurate, with some exceptions. Some chapters in obstetric care (part I) and obstetric complications (part II) are a good source for students while other chapters on maternal and fetal complications may be too involved and detailed for students and are more geared toward residents or general practitioners. Because the material is presented in an outline format, at times readers have to have a certain knowledge base in order to understand why things are included. The book is excellent at mentioning various treatment modalities, but does not spend much time explaining the rationale behind some therapies. Maternal fetal medicine fellows and specialists will be somewhat disappointed by the lack of detail.
Features: The manual packs a lot of information in a small, fairly easily accessible package. It is quite comprehensive and the outline format allows it to touch upon many different topics without much background explanation. The strength of this book is its use as a guide to therapy. It will help physicians to consider different differentials, diagnostic modalities, and treatments. Generally, it does not provide detailed treatment strategies, but rather helps practitioners with comprehensive lists of options and things to consider. This would be a valuable tool on the actual floors and would make a terrific study guide. There are not many graphs or tables, but this is understandable given the need to keep the size of the book at or near pocket size (albeit, a white coat pocket).
Assessment: All in all, this is a very good resource for anyone training to become an obstetrician. It would serve as a terrific study guide and can help those in training to develop comprehensive differentials and treatment options. It can serve as frontline resource for those caring for patients, with the understanding that for more in-depth information they would need to search the literature or textbooks.
