Description: This is a summary manual of general obstetrics. Chapters are mainly presented in bulleted format, which is an advantage for quick information searches. Tables are used effectively and list drug or management options. There are fewer images to supplement this book but are informative where added. This is a ninth edition, and the eighth edition was published in 2014.
Purpose: This is a daily-use, paperback pocket manual suitable for use at the bedside. Its goal is to provide quick access to answers for common problems in obstetrics. It also hopes to bridge the gap between professional guideline documents and textbooks. It successfully achieves both these goals. This is a concise, accurate reference for diagnosis and management of frequently encountered problems.
Audience: This book was written for busy practitioners who may need to access information at the bedside. It certainly achieves this goal and would be suitable for medical students and residents in obstetrics, emergency medicine, and family medicine as well as practicing obstetricians and midwives. This is a multiauthored book, and authors and contributors represent major medical centers across the country. Thus, it reflects practice patterns and standards recognized in the United States. A portion of the contributors are more junior faculty members, but these individuals have partnered with seasoned, well-recognized co-contributors. Both Drs. Evans and DeFranco are clinical scholars. Dr. DeFranco, a maternal-fetal medicine specialist, has authored dozens of peer-reviewed studies. Dr. Evans is also a maternal-fetal medicine specialist and chairman of the obstetrics and gynecology department. Both practice at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine.
Features: This manual covers antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum obstetrical care. The spectrum of content is broad and suitably encompassing of the specialty. The sections are logically partitioned. As a clinical reference, the bulleted format allows rapid, effective searches. The content is precise and accurate and reflects current practice standards and guidelines. The tables, algorithms, and figures are informative and the book would benefit from additional ones if space allowed.
Assessment: This book has a unique format and thus fills an important role in published works for our specialty. For example, Williams Manual of Pregnancy Complications, Leveno (McGraw Hill, 2013) has not been updated since the 23rd ed. In addition, most other manuals of this type cover both obstetrics and gynecology. As such, less space is available to each topic. As with any manual that acts as a summary tool, learners in obstetrics would simultaneously benefit from a companion textbook to add background content and offer care of more complex or unusual cases. Textbooks such as Williams Obstetrics, 25th edition, Cunningham et al. (McGraw Hill, 2018), Gabbe's Obstetrics: Normal and Problem Pregnancies, 8th edition, Landon et al. (Elsevier, 2021), and Creasy and Resnik's Maternal-Fetal Medicine, 8th edition, Resnik et al. (Elsevier, 2019) would be suitable supplements. This ninth edition update certainly reflects current practice. I am happy to share this book with my obstetric residents as a valuable, accurate, easy-to-use resource for use in the clinic or in labor and delivery. I am adding this edition to their resource library.
