The Manual of Geriatric Anesthesia is a practical guide for physicians, residents, and students interested in the care of the elderly patient undergoing surgery. Although primarily written for anesthesiologists, other perioperative physicians and nurses will also find the information highly valuable. Description: In light of the aging of the population, this book contains a mix of geriatric anesthesia "must-knows" and more general information on topics related to the elderly.
Purpose: Intended to provide a single source of topics related to geriatric anesthesia, this manual has taken up a highly worthy task. With a consistent style and well-defined chapters, this book succinctly covers all of the key topics.
Audience: It is written for all anesthesiologists who are seeking to improve upon their basic knowledge of the field of geriatric anesthesia. It is written at a level appropriate for those with a good base of knowledge in the field of anesthesia in general, and aims to supplement that understanding. The editor has assembled authorities in the field, many of whom are leaders in the Society for the Advancement of Geriatric Anesthesia.
Features: The book is divided into logical sections, with the first two on general aging issues and their impact on anesthesia delivery. It then covers perioperative concerns and the impact of geriatric issues on various broad types of surgery, such as vascular, spine, genitourinary, and ophthalmologic procedures. Rounding out the book are chapters focusing on the CNS, such as postoperative cognitive dysfunction, polypharmacy, and psychotropic medications. An outstanding chapter discusses dementia and distinguishing Alzheimer's disease, vascular dementia, and Parkinson's disease.
Assessment: This is an up-to-date, easy-to-read, and succinct book that covers many of the issues involved in this patient population. As more and more elderly in the U.S. are coming to operating rooms for more complex procedures, practicing clinicians must be well versed in this important area.
