Overview

The wastelands is contemporary problem of any developing country. The Government launched several programmes for the development of wastelands but could not achieve the requisite target. In these three volumes - papers have been contributed by the eminent Scholars, Scientists, Technocrats and Social Scientists to assess the identification, distribution, problems of wastelands who have suggested suitable remedial measures for the appropriate reclamation of wastelands. This book has been divided into Three Volumes, they are: Volume one - ‘Identification and Distribution' analyzes the historical perspectives of Wastelands with its identification, Typology, Mapping procedure, its distribution and utilization through mapping. The soils of the wastelands of different areas-have also been analyzed. Volume Two - ‘Problems and Prospects' addresses the reclamation suitability, classification of wastelands and its factors responsible for the growth. It explains the problems, impact of irrigation and structural measures for wastelands. It evaluates the maps and mapping of wastelands through Remote Sensing techniques. The problems of wastelands and reclamation of wastelands has also been explained. Volume Three - ‘Reclamation and Development' analyses the wide range of issues related to the reclamation of wastelands and its economic viobility and development for Agriculture, Horticulture and Social-forestry programmes to meet the growing demand of ever-increasing cattle and human population for Fuel Wood, Fodder, Fibre, Fruits, Fisheries and Food Grains and also to maintain the ecological imbalances of the area.

About the Author

N.S. SREENIVASAN, after obtaining his Master's Degree in Statistics from the University of Mysore, joined SQC and OR Division of the Indian Statistical Institute in 1956. He was extensively involved in consulting work related to Management of Quality in a large number of industrial as well as service organisations like hospital, transport. In 1975, he joined M/s IDL Chemicals Ltd. He had several key assignments as Manager (QC), Manager (Safety), Production Manager, Works Manager, Chief Executive of the explosives manufacturing unit at Rourkela and now General Manager (Planning, Research and Development). He has published a number of papers on diverse subjects like Quality, Safety, Personnel, Innovation and General Management in a number of national and international journals. His book on ‘Management of Safety — Concepts and Tasks' published in 1984 has very well been received and had an extremely favourable review from several national and international journals. He is a founder-member of Indian Association for Quality and Reliability and an active member of Quality Circle Forum of India, Hyderabad Chapter.

V. NARAYANA after obtaining Master’s degree in Statistics from the University of Mysore, joined the Statistical Quality Control and Operations Research Division of the Indian Statistical Institute in 1956. Since then he has been involved in promotion training and consultancy in applications of Quality Management and SQC techniques in a number of different types of industries — Engineering, Pharmaceuticals, Textiles etc. He has been guest faculty at programmes organised by Administrative Staff College of India, Engineering Staff College of India, National Institute for Small Industry Extension Training, Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University etc. He is a founder member of the Indian Association for Quality & Reliability and Quality Circle Forum of India.
