Plant Protection continues to play a significant role in achieving targets of crop production. The major thrust areas of plant protection are promotion of, ensuring availability of safe and quality pesticides for sustaining crop production from the ravages of pests and diseases, streamlining the quarantine measures for accelerating the introduction of new high yielding crop varieties, besides eliminating the chances of entry of exotic pests and for human resource development including empowerment of women in plant protection skills. On the recommendation of Planning Commission, the Scheme sat A to D have been merged as a single scheme i.e. "strengthening and Modernization of Pest Management Approach in lndia" with a total outlay of Rs. 99.95 crore during Tenth Five Year Plan (2002'2007). About the Author

Utpal K. Banerjee took his honours degree in Pure Physics (1955) from the University of Calcutta and his Ph.D. from the University of Manchester, UK (1972) where he was awarded the Commonwealth Scholarship. After serving for 17 years in the Ministries of Defence, Industry and Finance, Dr. Banerjee worked with Tata Steel as Chief of Management Services; the Administrative Staff College of India as Director of Computer Division; Electronics India as its Senior Executive Director; and finally, All India Management Association as its Director General. He has also considerable experience of teaching at the IITs, IIMs Jawaharlal Nehru University, International Management Institute, FORE School of Management, and Management Development Institute. Apart from many research papers, Dr. Banerjee has 15 books to his credit.
