Purpose: The purpose is to gather all of the known science behind pediatric obesity and type 2 diabetes into one volume, covering clinical approaches to prevention, assessment, and management to assist healthcare providers.
Audience: The intended audience includes a wide gamut of healthcare professionals, including physicians, dieticians, psychologists, researchers, and academicians.
Features: The first of the three sections discusses the genetics and epidemiology of pediatric obesity and type 2 diabetes. Based on current research studies, it presents detailed descriptions of the complex genetic and environmental factors predisposing children to obesity and diabetes. Tables and charts help organize the information more concisely. The second section discusses assessment and management of pediatric obesity, with an emphasis on assessing the cardiovascular status of obese children to determine the risk of early onset cardiovascular disease. A commendable discussion of the still ill-defined metabolic syndrome in children includes proposed diagnostic criteria and treatment options. The bulk of the second section focuses on treatment of pediatric obesity through community programs, physical activity, behavior modification, and surgical intervention. The third section discusses the management of type 2 diabetes through nutrition, behavior modification, and pharmacology. The chapter on nutrition is short, but well organized and to the point. While only two pharmacologic agents, metformin and insulin, have been approved for pediatric use, all currently available pharmacological agents for treating type 2 diabetes are discussed. References abound and an index is included.
Assessment: The book can be a tedious read for busy practitioners, but it is a welcome compilation of the currently available knowledge on the etiology, epidemiology, and treatment of obesity and type 2 diabetes in children. It is a worthwhile addition to the series.
