Description: This book does not go into great depth about management and leadership concepts, but it does provide exercises and case studies for incorporating them.
Purpose: The purpose is to discuss management and leadership trends and to present assignments and case studies with each identified section. This is a worthy objective, but the concepts are not developed in any depth and may be better covered in a more detailed text.
Audience: The book is written for undergraduate nursing students and others interested in healthcare management and leadership. Although I agree that it is suitable for undergraduate students, some of the assignments may be difficult for undergraduates to accomplish.
Features: Covering the basics of management, the book starts with leadership theory and continues with the skills of management, such as interviewing, team building, and performance appraisals. The assignments and case studies are the best part of the book. The sections on management actions are the most helpful for student learning and task accomplishment. The shortcoming is that the book attempts to cover many management concepts, but does not develop any in sufficient depth. Even though the assignments deal with nursing ideas, they could be used for any management course and do not address the most pressing problems in management, such as budgeting, federal regulations, crucial conversations, and collaboration.
Assessment: The book definitely has some good points and could be incorporated into a nursing program that has other management/leadership resources. I enjoyed the assignments and they had excellent ideas, such as role playing and group work. However, it does not cover the concepts in detail and does not incorporate many current management problems that are plaguing our profession. A second edition, dealing with finances, point of entry, federal regulations, and interdisciplinary collaboration may be of great benefit.
